Learn to Skate - Figure&Hockey
Our beginner skating program, Learn to Skate - Basic Skills, provides a foundation for fundamental ice skating, giving the students the opportunity to pursue figure skating or hockey. The goal for WFSC is to provide the participants with a positive and fun experience. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated.
Our Basic Skills curriculum is beneficial for all ice skaters, regardless what discipline the skater eventually specializes in.
We offer testing for Hockey badges through Learn to Skate USA, just like we offer testing for their Figure Skating badges. Our classes will be combined until we grow too big to do so, but each skater will test according to their preferred discipline.

Hockey players can significantly benefit from figure skating lessons due to the focus on detailed edge work, balance, and agility, which translates to improved skating technique and overall performance on the ice. Figure skating coaches emphasize precision and proper body positioning, helping hockey players develop more efficient strides and enhanced control. Beginner hockey lessons often focus more on learning to play the game, and working on stick control. Skating skills can take a backseat due to lack of time. We can help!
Eligibility
Beginners of any age 4 or older who are independent & motivated are welcome! Groups will be divided by skill level.
(We do offer Snowplow Sam classes for those 6 years old and younger who might need more attention and help.)
Season
Sessions are available in half season or whole season. We have a Fall Session that runs from mid-September into December, and a Winter Session that runs Jan-March. Those who sign up for the full season (Sept thru March) receive a discount!
Figure & Hockey
While the club is still small, Figure Skating 1-6 will be grouped with Hockey 1-4 because they are learning the same skills. However, testing will be based on what badge they are working on.
Expectations
It usually takes about 2 or 3 weeks for beginning skaters to become comfortable on the ice. It's okay to feel frustrated. But don't give up, it's worth the effort!
Equipment
Skaters will need to come with their own skates, skate guards and helmet.
Warm comfortable clothes are recommended. Waterproof gloves, beanies or ear warmers, crash pads for hips and knees, snowpants, and layers are also advised.
If you have any questions about equipment, please contact us.
Extra Costs
- It's important to keep your skate blades sharpened, the closest facility for figure skates is in Minot and costs approx $20/sharpening. (subject to change without notice)
- We have Merch!
Location
Lessons and practice ice will be held at the Agri-Sports Complex at the UMFV Fairgrounds in Williston, ND
